Phillip Hatley's Family

Exploring the legacy of the Jim Crow era in Memphis, Tn

In 1939, Philip Hatley, a 43-year-old mill worker and WWI veteran, was killed by two police officers in his home in Memphis, Tennessee.

Hatley’s brother, James Hatley, later wrote to President Roosevelt, seeking assistance for Hatley’s widow and children, alleging that the officers were intoxicated at the time of the shooting.

Despite the tragic circumstances, there was no legal accountability for the perpetrators. The case is documented by the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ), which preserves records of racial violence and injustice.
